Downhill Double Dipper at Disney’s Blizzard Beach (An Inner Tube Thrill Slide)
A trip to Disney’s Blizzard Beach wouldn’t be complete without a few races down the purple slopes. This side of Mount Gushmore features two mat slides and one inner tube option. The inner tube slide is the Downhill Double Dipper, a side-by-side thrill slide that allows two guests to race to the finish. Below, we’ll preview the attraction and discuss what to expect. While it’s a fun ride, it’s not for everyone.
How Disney Water Parks Operate
It’s important to note that Disney’s water parks operate on a rotational schedule. Blizzard Beach is typically open between early November and March, and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is open between March and November. You’ll want to check the exact hours and availability for your visit.
When you face Mount Gushmore from the front of the park, the Purple Slope is on the left side. This is where you’ll find the Downhill Double Dipper, the Snow Stormers, and the Toboggan Racers. A sign posts the wait times and ride restrictions for all three slides. The sign reads:
Ready, set, side! Grab your tube and blast down the slopes on a high-speed race on side-by-side speed slides. For safety, you should be in good health and free from heart conditions, back or neck problems, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.
Persons who do not meet the minimum height requirement may not ride.
Clothing with rivets, buckles, or exposed metal is not permitted. Glasses and loose jewelry should be removed. Pool depth at the bottom of the slide is 4’5″ (1.3 m.)
You should be a strong swimmer.
Blizzard Beach Signage Text
The Downhill Double Dipper has a 48″ height requirement. Guests are asked to measure without footwear. One positive aspect of this attraction is that you can pick up your inner tube near the slide’s entrance—you don’t have to carry it up the side of the mountain.
When you exit the slide, you’ll notice a tube drop-off. To use it, you just drop your innertube into the slot, and a conveyor system does the heavy lifting.
It might be a little difficult to tell from the photo, but this is a pretty intense slide. At the top, you’ll either race with someone in your group or get paired with a single rider. Both parties will line up in front of the gate. When the gate retracts, you immediately take off down the slide. The top of the slide is a tunnel with a 50′ drop, so you’ll be entirely in the dark for the first few seconds of the ride. Then, you’ll race out of the tunnel before reaching the end.
A sign at the end of the slide displays the times so you can see who won. Make sure to look for it when you reach the bottom. There’s nothing like bragging rights or having a good reason to ride it again!
The Resorts Gal Spin on the Downhill Double Dipper
We give the Downhill Dipper the green light if you meet the height requirement and aren’t scared of the drop. While this attraction isn’t nearly as intense as Summit Plummet or Slush Gusher, it still involves a significant drop. This is an attraction I would probably brave once with the family. But, for me, it would be enough thrill for the day.
Resorts Gal Traffic Signal Guidelines
Green Light:
We give an attraction the green light if we consider it a must-do, regardless of the posted wait. We also green light any attractions we deem suitable to experience anytime. For example, some attractions have high capacities. Therefore, the lines continuously move and you shouldn’t have a long wait unless the attraction were to experience downtime.
Red Light:
We recommend checking the posted wait times for red light attractions. Then, make a quick judgment call on whether to wait, skip it, or return later. We also red light some attractions that we feel might not be suitable based on our experience.
Final Thoughts
The Downhill Double Dipper is a lot of fun, even more so if you’re of a competitive nature. For other attractions at Blizzard Beach, you might enjoy:
