We’re Convinced No One Knows the Mountain Trail at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Exists!

It’s true. We walk the Mountain Trail every time we visit Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and are convinced that other guests are unaware it exists. The Mount Mayday Trail is one of those off-the-beaten-path things. But if you take the time to really explore the park, you’ll likely end up on the trail a time or two.

I’ll be the first to admit that I visited Typhoon Lagoon many times before discovering the Mountain Trail. Unfortunately, it’s not advertised. But after seeing a couple of photos of it on social media, I decided to investigate on our next visit. Of course, that was nearly a decade ago. But I’m so glad I found this special place, and I am hopeful that other readers will find it through our site and enjoy it as much as we do!

The Mountain Trail starts on each side of Mount Mayday. For this article, we’ll start near the “falls slides” and then cross the mountain. On the way down, we’ll pass the entrance to Humunga Kowabunga and end up near the Storm Slides. The trailhead is near the entrance of Gangplank Falls. You’ll find two sets of staircases sitting side-by-side. The one on the right says, “Mt. Mayday Trail to Mountain Overlook Only.” This is the one you’ll take.

You’ll take a few steps up, and then a small path leads to the rope bridge suspended over Castaway Creek. The views are something from way up here!

Once reaching the rope bridge, you can see Typhoon Tilly, the shipwreck perched on the mountain’s peak. Looking down, we see the lazy river.

As you continue on the Mountain Trail, a few walkways have waterfalls spilling across them. These areas offer a nice place to cool off on your journey over Mount Mayday. You can choose to continue up to the overlook or scale the mountain. At this point, the overlook is about two more flights of stairs. So it’s not far, and the view is worth it.

Here is the view from where I’m standing in the picture above. I haven’t reached the top yet—the rope bridge is behind us.

Here is the view from the overlook. In the distance, you can see Typhoon Lagoon’s Wave Pool and a few hotels at Disney Springs.

As we continue down the path, we run into the entrance to Humunga Kowabunga, the park’s 5-story foot drop thrill slide.

We’ll continue down the opposite side of the Mountain Trail and come out by the Storm Slides.

If you were on this side of the park, you could take the Mountain Trail in the opposite direction and come out by Gangplank Falls, Keelhaul Falls, Mayday Falls, and Ketchakiddee Creek.

We give the Mountain Trail the green light! However, if you don’t feel up to the stairs, you might want to personally red light it. We love the Mountain Trail and always wish that more guests were aware it existed!

Green Light

We give an attraction the green light if we consider it a must-do, regardless of the posted wait. We also give the green light for attractions we deem suitable to experience anytime. For example, some attractions have high capacities. Therefore, the lines continuously move and you shouldn’t have a long wait unless the attraction experiences downtime.

Red Light

We recommend checking the posted wait times for red light attractions. Then, make a quick judgment call on whether to wait, skip it, or return later. We also red light some attractions that we feel might not be suitable based on our experience.

Final Thoughts

We’ve made it across the mountain to the end of the Mountain Trail. Hopefully, you’ll have the opportunity to explore it on a future visit! It’s an excellent place to take a break and escape the crowds. You might have noticed that there wasn’t anyone in the photos of the actual trail! That’s why I’m convinced others don’t know about it!
