Two Beloved Attractions Are Now Permanently Closed at Magic Kingdom

In an effort to modernize its theme parks, Disney has closed several attractions over the past six months. Granted, new lands, themed areas, attractions, dining, and shopping will attract both first-time visitors and returning guests in the years to come. It is, however, difficult to see the closure of the Liberty Square Riverboat and Tom Sawyer Island. This area has always been one of the most scenic and nature-themed areas of Magic Kingdom since day one.

Of course, I wasn’t even born at that time. But I have distinct memories of attractions like the Liberty Belle and time spent with my grandparents at the Most Magical Place on Earth. Looking back, I never knew that the Magic Kingdom was so young when I first visited in the mid-80s. It felt like a place that had been around forever. It still feels that way today, due to themed areas like Frontierland, Liberty Square, and Main Street U.S.A., to name a few.

So with those thoughts, I am sad to see such a peaceful park area transition over the coming years to become a new Cars-themed area. Don’t get me wrong, we love Cars and are hopeful about the outcome. But I’m not so sure it’s worth the expense of this priceless area.

As of this morning, both Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America have been removed from the park’s map.
