A Taste of the Cake Bake Shop: The Gluten-Free Brownie at Disney’s BoardWalk
Decadent desserts. That’s one of the things you can expect to enjoy at the Cake Bake Shop Bakery at Disney’s BoardWalk. On a recent visit, I stopped by the bakery portion of the relatively new location to pick up a special treat. If you’ve been following along, you may remember that I paired a gluten-free brownie from the bakery with an order of loaded crab fries from Hurricane Hanna’s and called it a late lunch. This was my first purchase from the bakery

If you are unaware, The Cake Bake Shop has two locations on the Boardwalk, a restaurant and a bakery. If you’re hoping to dine at the restaurant, you’ll want reservations. They do, however, take walk-ups based on availability. If you hope to enjoy a meal there, we suggest securing a reservation on OpenTable (the website or app). We also use OpenTable for securing dining reservations at Disney Springs. For this visit, we’re stepping inside the bakery where you can purchase a variety of sweets and treats, or just browse if you like.

The bakery was decorated in autumn colors to represent the changing season. The Cake Bake Shop is well-known for offering seasonal decor. As you can see, it’s an elegant venue. Everywhere you look, you’ll notice the care and attention to detail.

We’ll take a quick look at what was available on this visit. Note that some items are considered staples while others come and go seasonally.

I imagine these unicorn cookies are fairly popular.

They had a selection of macarons and a slab of fudge.

The variety of brownies and bars interested me the most. The magic bar and the walnut brownie immediately stood out.

Of course, I am interested in trying the cake at some point. But we have plans to stay at the BoardWalk later this year. So I decided to wait and enjoy a slice when I have someone who will share it with me.

I was pretty much settled on ordering the walnut brownie, but the cast members insisted that the gluten free brownie was the way to go. Both the brownies were covered in a pretty gold dust, which concerned me a little since I have a food dye allergy. They asked the chef, and he was able to point out the items, including various cake flavors, that wouldn’t be suitable. The gold dust was not an issue.

Ultimately, I decided to go with the gluten-free brownie. They placed it in a bag, and I was off to the Beach Club to pick up those fries.

It was about to rain, so after picking up my fries, I headed inside the Beach Club and found a spot in The Solarium. Here’s a look at the brownie, which was a pretty decent size.

It was large enough that I was able to cut it in half and put the rest in my backpack for later. The brownie had a rich but not overly sweet flavor. Its soft texture was perfect. I have no complaints about it, except for one. I’m sure you already guessed it. The brownie cost $11.00. (For the record, all of the bars in the same area pictured above were $11.00 on this visit, and the cake averages about $22.00 a slice.)

Overall, I enjoyed the brownie and thought it was a nice first visit to this location. I’ve asked myself, did the brownie stand out or taste profoundly better than other treats I’ve enjoyed? I’ve had a difficult time answering that question.
It was good. It wasn’t $11.00 good. I would gladly pay $11.00 for it again. Here’s why:
The more I’ve thought it over, I was surprised at my own conclusion. You see, I am the type of person who would order a ridiculously over-priced meal from room service if it were offered. We used to order room service at the Beach Club all the time because of the convenience and exhaustion after hitting the parks hard. Now, if you come back to the resort at 9:00 or 10:00, you might have a difficult time finding a meal.
Thankfully, at this time, the Cake Bake Shop (restaurant and bakery) is open until 11:00 p.m. every night. So if you’re feeling famished, you have an option. Albeit a sweet and expensive one. I’m looking forward to trying something else on a future visit and eventually enjoying a meal, when it makes sense, at the restaurant. Oh, and for the record, I remembered the brownie when I got back to my condo later that evening. It was the perfect midnight snack.
