Disney’s Polynesian Refurbishment Updates (Boat Dock Reopens, Bus Stop, and More)
If you’ve visited Disney’s Polynesian in recent months, you are likely aware that a significant exterior refurbishment is ongoing. From transportation options being affected to scaffolding covering an entire side of the Great Ceremonial House, the work taking place would be pretty hard to miss. Thankfully, one of those projects is now completed…the resort’s boat dock. It reopened last Friday afternoon after nearly a month-long closure that was announced in April.

We have stopped by the Polynesian a couple of times in the last few weeks. Here is a photo of the completed boat dock. As you can see, the entirety of the wood planks on the decking has been replaced. This boat service runs in a triangle of sorts. It runs between the Grand Floridian, Polynesian, and Magic Kingdom. We have a separate photo report of how the Polynesian boat service works.

If you arrive at the Polynesian by boat, you’ll immediately notice that the Great Ceremonial House is covered with scaffolding.

Because of this work, the Tiki Terrace is closed for refurbishment. It is expected to reopen by late June. I imagine that Disney wants this area of work wrapped up by the 4th of July.

The scaffolding also affects the outdoor seating area of Capt. Cook’s, the resort’s quick service restaurant. Additionally, guests dining upstairs at ‘Ohana aren’t benefiting from the usual serene views of Seven Seas Lagoon and Cinderella Castle in the distance. Of course, this area of scaffolding has been up since back in March.

There are a few cutouts where guests can enter and exit Captain Cook’s from the exterior while the work is being completed.

Next, we’ll take a look at the resort’s bus stop. When we walked through the area last Wednesday, there was still some work being completed.

However, by Friday afternoon, it looked as though the work was complete.

The new bus stop will be a huge asset to the resort. Even though the location hasn’t changed, you can see where a new bus-only path has been poured. The freshly paved road circles around, allowing the buses to enter and exit the resort at the former main entrance. In case you haven’t visited the resort lately, the Polynesian has a new main entrance that opened last December.

While the boat dock, bus stop, and Great Ceremonial House are the major news of this report, there are still a few other refurbishments going on around the resort. For instance, we saw some work being completed around the edges of several village buildings.

Every time we’ve been through, there have been small cranes and workers present, as late as 8:00 p.m. It is rare to see workers out that late. It also signals that there is an urgency to get the work completed. You can’t help but notice the “beep, beep, beep” of the construction equipment every few minutes. The building below is Aotearoa.

Here we have Tonga, which has just received a new staircase. I haven’t kept count, but many of the buildings have received new staircases in the last year or so. While all of the buildings have elevators, these staircases serve as an emergency exit.

Here is the temporary metal staircase that’s been on the front of Tonga since back in March. It should be coming down soon since the new set of stairs looks almost complete.

Last but not least, there is roof work being completed on the Wailulu Bar and Grill at the Island Tower. This work on the bar and grill’s roof area is also expected to be finished by late June.

Here is a closer look at the work. We had a late lunch on the outdoor patio at Wailulu Bar and Grill a few weeks ago. While the work was noticeable when we first arrived, I don’t think we ever noticed it after we were seated. Of course, seating at the actual bar area is only available after 5:00 p.m. until this job wraps up.

As a reminder, here is the entire refurbishment notice with timelines for the current work being completed at Disney’s Polynesian.
Through 2026, some areas of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows are being refurbished. This work includes the reconfiguration of the front entrance roadway and bus area. Additionally, some views of the theme parks and other surrounding areas may be impacted. Most Resort dining, pools and amenities will remain available.

From mid-April through late June, Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort will be temporarily closed due to refurbishment work at the Grand Ceremonial House.
Â
From April 23 through late June, updates will be made to the exterior roofing at Wailulu Bar & Grill in the Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Wailulu Bar & Grill will remain open during the work. Each day, the bar will offer walk-up service only until 5:00 PM and seating will be unavailable. Seating will resume from 5:00 PM until closing.
Â
From May 11 through late June, the boat dock at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort will undergo routine maintenance. The dock will be closed and boat transportation to Magic Kingdom park will be suspended from May 11 through June 5.
Â
While construction activity will be noticeable during daytime hours, efforts will be made to minimize disruptions. Please allow for extra travel time when arriving at or leaving the Resort.Walt Disney World Website
As you can see, most of the work we discussed is expected to wrap up in the next few weeks. However, the notice states that work is expected to continue through 2026. So you can still expect to see some ongoing work if you have a stay planned in the near future.
On the positive side, the resort is looking great and as tropical as ever. While this resort refurbishment has caused some eyesores and can be considered a nuisance, the result will be the payoff. Speaking for myself, I can’t wait to enjoy a long walk through the resort, where the only thing I photograph is the latest flowers in bloom. I’ll also be happy to enjoy the resort’s zen-like background music without being interrupted by all those beeping noises. If you’ve walked through the resort at all lately, you know exactly what I mean.
